Understanding your metabolism is key to designing effective nutrition and lifestyle strategies. We use indirect calorimetry, the gold-standard method for assessing energy metabolism, to measure your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) with precision.

What is Indirect Calorimetry?

Indirect calorimetry estimates your energy expenditure by measuring the exchange of gases during breathing - specifically, oxygen consumption (VO₂) and carbon dioxide production (VCO₂).
Testing is simple, non-invasive, and involves wearing a lightweight face mask with integrated advanced flow meters and gas sensors.

The Calibre Biometrics device we use utilises state-of-the-art wearable technology validated for accuracy against 15 leading metabolic analysers in a recent independent study. The Calibre device demonstrated excellent agreement in measuring oxygen uptake, carbon dioxide output, and total energy expenditure, achieving one of the lowest error rates among tested systems.

Why Measure Your RMR?

Personalised Weight Management

Accurate knowledge of your resting energy needs is the foundation of effective weight management. Many weight-loss challenges stem from misestimating calorie requirements. Generic formulas often over- or underestimate energy needs by up to 30%, leading to frustration, plateaus, or unsafe deficits.

By measuring your RMR directly:

  • Tailored calorie targets can be set for safe and effective fat loss.
  • Maintenance calories can be more accurately established, helping to prevent rebound weight gain.
  • Motivation and adherence often improve, as interventions are based on your unique metabolism rather than averages.

Research also shows that individuals are more likely to follow dietary recommendations when they are informed by objective metabolic testing, helping to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

Health Optimisation and Sports Performance

Matching energy intake to energy expenditure is crucial not only for weight control, but also for long-term health, recovery, and performance.

  • Consistently exceeding energy needs leads to unwanted fat gain, negatively affecting body composition and performance in weight-sensitive sports.
  • Chronic under-fuelling increases the risk of syndrome referred to as Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S), affecting bone health, hormonal function, immunity, cardiovascular health, and overall metabolic rate.

By using indirect calorimetry:

  • Safe lower limits for energy intake can be defined during fat loss phases.
  • Training and recovery nutrition can be more closely aligned with physiological needs.
  • Risks of metabolic disruption and RED-S can be proactively managed.
